Pittsburgh, subway, metro, light rail
Category: Travel & Events
Description: Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania's light rail system, known as the "T", mainly serves the downtown core and the regions to the south of the city. Although it is mainly a surface route, there are tunnel sections. In this March 2013 footage, we see the underground portion in the city centre at Gateway Station, with trains heading out and coming in from a tunnel under the Allegheny River connecting the downtown to the north shore.

America's steel city was left for dead after the industry collapsed in the 1980s. Unemployment soared, the population plummeted and corporations fled. While in Pittsburgh recently, I did manage to do a little bit of railfanning, but didn't shoot any video while there, other than this. I rode the Pittsburgh Port Authority's 'T' light rail extension, recently completed across (actually under) the Allegheny River to the North Shore area of the city, home to stadiums, a casino and the Allegheny Commons. Starting at Steel Plaza, the stations seen are Wood Street, the rebuilt Gateway station, then North Side and Allegheny- the present terminus- after crossing under the river.

A photo montage of Pittsburgh Streetcars. VIEW IN FULL SCREEN HD 720p, 1080p resolution settings available. JAN. 1, 1902. Pittsburgh Railways Co. is formed as a result of several companies consolidating their operations. There are 1,100 trolleys in operation in the city and the turn-of-the-century car has eight-wheels, high steps and narrow doors making traveling slow and cumbersome, particularly for women whose clothes don't allow them to negotiate the cars easily. Pittsburgh Railways has 400 miles of single track; carries 178.7 million passengers a year and has revenues of $6.7 million. MARCH 1964. Allegheny County's Port Authority Transit is formed to unify public transit services. Despite the declining trolley use, the Port Authority inherits 283 PCC trolley cars and 219 buses. 1964 to 1967. Many rail routes are converted to bus routes.

From Friday evening until noon on Sunday, Pittsburgh's Mt. Washington Transit Tunnel is closed for work. During this time that means that the light rail, as well as bus routes (operated by Port Authority and others like Mid Mon Valley Transit) must climb into Allentown instead. This video shows light rail trains on the Red and Blue lines running along the old 52 Allentown/Brown Line tracks that are now only used when the Transit Tunnel is closed.

An eastbound cab ride on one of Cleveland's Red Line rapid transit trains in August 2010. This journey begins at W25th Station and proceeds through one of only two "subway" segments of the line at Tower City, ending at E55th Station. Note the lower portion of the platform at E55th, which accommodates the Light Rail lines that share this section of track.
