China warns the United States to be cautious while handling issues related to Taiwan and the Chinese territorial integrity. China's Foreign Ministry spokeswoman also said the one-China principle is widely recognized by the international community and it’s the foundation of China's relations with other countries. Hua Chunying added that Washington must abide by the one-China policy. Two weeks ago, US President-elect Donald Trump had a phone conversation with Taiwan’s president. Beijing angrily reacted to the phone call, calling Trump inexperienced regarding foreign policy. China has long held that Taiwan is the most sensitive issue in the U.S.-China relationship, but in recent years, Taiwan has been overshadowed by tensions over maritime disputes and China’s building and militarization of artificial islands in the South China Sea. Since the Dec. 2 phone call between President-elect Donald Trump and Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen, however, Taiwan is once again rising to the top of the agenda in U.S.-China relations. In recent days, China has stepped up its warnings over Trump’s approach to Taiwan, particularly his Fox News comments on Dec. 11 suggesting that Washington’s long-standing “One-China” policy could be abandoned unless Beijing is willing to treat it as part of a broader deal that includes other issues such as trade. ................. China is preparing to return a U.S. underwater drone it seized last week. The U.S. publicly demanded it back, but China blamed the U.S. for dramatizing the event. After both countries agreed the drone would be returned, President-elect Donald Trump waded into the issue, breathing new life into an incident both militaries seem eager to put behind them. The world’s second largest economy is on the brink of collapse, at least that’s what best-selling author and Forbes contributor Gordon Chang believes. Author of The Coming Collapse of China, Chang gave his outlook on the country’s economy, which remains grim -- more so now than ever. ‘Chinese leaders have the ability to defer crises,’ he told Kitco News. ‘As they defer them, the underlying imbalances in the Chinese economy are getting bigger, which means when adjustments come -- which are inevitable -- they will be severe.’ To Chang, China is in more trouble now given America’s overall influence on the country’s economy. ‘[Donald] Trump and Janet Yellen have much more effect on what’s going to go on in China than Chinese technocrats, who are at the mercy of the United States right now.’ And when this collapse happens, gold will move higher, he said. ‘People are going to the dollar as a safe haven and they’re going to go into gold because that has traditionally been where investors go when they’re really nervous.’ Don’t forget to sign up for Kitco News’ Weekly Roundup – comes out every Friday to recap the hottest stories & videos of the week: http://www.kitco.com/newsletter Join the conversation @ The Kitco Forums and be part of the premier online community for precious metals investors: http://kitcomm.com -- Or join the conversation on social media: @KitcoNewsNOW on Twitter: http://twitter.com/kitconews --- Kitco News on Facebook: http://facebook.com/kitconews --- Kitco News on Google+: http://google.com/+kitco --- Kitco News on StockTwits: http://stocktwits.com/kitconews

(16 Dec 2016) President Barack Obama says he's advised Donald Trump to "think it through" before making any changes to the "one-China" policy. Trump has said he wouldn't feel bound by the decades-old policy in which the U.S. recognizes Taiwan as part of China. The "one-China" policy became an issue after Trump broke decades of diplomatic protocol by having a telephone conversation with Taiwan's president. Obama says he told Trump to have his full team in place and be fully briefed on issues before considering any changes. Obama said at his year-end news conference that the Taiwan issue is of utmost importance to the Chinese, and how they react to any potential change could be very significant.
