Check out these real mermaid sightings around the world! This top 10 list of amazing discoveries of real life mermaid bodies is absolutely intrigueing! British Columbia, 1967 In 1967, British Columbia became a hub of mermaid excitement when, one day, Ferry riders spotted a mermaid lounging on the shore of Mayne Island. They claimed they saw a topless, blonde woman with the tail of a porpoise sitting on the beach shore. Some witnesses even became very upset, as they believed they saw the mermaid eating a raw salmon. One tourist from Iowa even managed to take a picture. After the sighting, the mermaid was seen one more time the following week. As the locals got swept up by the spotting of this mysterious mermaid, the town locals began to seek any information relating to her. The town newspaper, The Colonist, put up a $25,000 reward for the mermaid. Arrangements were even made for the mermaid to have room and board once she was found and successfully acclimated into the town setting. Although many believe that the whole thing was a charade, many still believe that what they saw was real. 9. Scotland, 1830 Mermaids are a part of Scotland’s countless mysteries and legends. It’s not surprising, then, that there would be many accounts of mermaid sightings. In 1830, the people of the island of Benbecula saw a mermaid. While cutting seaweed near the shore one day, a woman reportedly saw a miniature woman swimming in the water. Surprised by her discovery, she called many people over to view the water dweller. Some men rushed at her in the water, either to catch her or get a closer look, and the woman swam out of reach. Some boys threw stones at the frightened mermaid and one struck her in the back. A few days later, the corpse of the mermaid supposedly washed up on the shore. Like many of the other claims of mermaids, this one was small, with pale white skin and had the tail of a fish without scales. After the discovery, the sheriff of the town thought it only fitting that the mermaid have a proper burial. Someone constructed a coffin and the mermaid, wrapped in a shroud, was laid to rest above the shoreline where she was found. To this day, no one knows exactly where the mermaid was buried as no marker was left to denote the spot. 8. West Indies, 1614 John Smith, the same John Smith from Pocahontas, reported that he saw a mermaid off the coast of West Indies in 1614. According to the story, Smith saw a woman swimming parallel to the shore. He was captivated by the grace in which she moved and noted that she had ears that were too long, a nose that was too short, eyes that were too round, and green hair. He also noted that the woman was a little attractive from the waist up. From the waist down, however, she was all fish. Some doubt has been thrown on the veracity of the tale of course, otherwise where would the mystery be. One source claims he wasn’t in the West Indies but in Newfoundland. Another historian says Smith wasn’t in the West Indies in 1614, though he was there in 1607. Potato patato in this case. The same historian suggested that Alexandre Dumas fabricated the tale to give credence to his own mermaid story about a Frenchman searching for a Dutchman who had four children with a mermaid. 7. Norway, 1608 In 1608, Henry Hudson explored the cold northern waters off Norway. Written in his journal, he describes a day when he encountered a group of mermaids. Hudson claimed a mermaid appeared in the water, saw his crew and called up more of her mermaid sisters. He described the women as being as big as the men in his crew, with very white skin and long dark hair. He claimed their tails looked like a dolphin’s but were spotted like a mackerel. Hudson was thrilled that he had discovered mermaids. What makes this case so strange is that it occurred in the Bering Sea. Most mermaid sightings are discounted as sailors mistaking animals, often manatees, as mermaids. However, no manatees swim the waters of the Bering Sea. Naturalist Philip Henry Gosse, in his mid-1800s work The Romance of Natural History, believes it to be impossible that Hudson mistook an animal for this mermaid. He believes seasoned sailors such as Hudson would be able to identify animals in that location easily. Gosse believes either Hudson made this entire story up or Hudson saw something truly unique to the realm of science. We may never know.

Check out the most crazy things ancient greeks did! This top 10 list of crazy facts about ancient greece and their culture is absolutely amazing! Subscribe For New Videos! http://goo.gl/UIzLeB Watch our "Ancient Objects And HOW They Were Used!" video here: https://youtu.be/0de2nV8OHJk Watch our "Most MYSTERIOUS Ocean Facts!" video here: https://youtu.be/BzrlpgRVPQg Watch our "Most STRANGE Things Found On The Beach!" video here: https://youtu.be/cQjpze_4z5U 10. Milo of Croton The Ancient Greeks invented progressive strength training. Milo of Croton won six Olympiads in the wrestling events. He also won multiple times at the Pythian Games, Isthmian Games, and Nemean Games. Milo loved to show off his strength and dexterity. According to sources, his favorite trick was to hold a pomegranate and have people try to take it from him. No one was strong enough to take the pomegranate from him and he also managed to not damage the fruit. How did he gain such prodigious strength and skill? According to popular legend, Milo noticed a newborn calf near his home. He decided to lift the animal and carry it on his shoulders. He returned the next day and did it again. He did it every day until the calf grew to a four-year-old bull. Thus was progressive strength training born. Here’s another wild athlete story. Theagenes of Thasos was a formidable fighter who won over 1,300 bouts over his two decade career. He even won a crown for long-distance running in the city of Argos. As a boxer, he was never defeated. According to legend, years after his, a vandal tried to deface a statue honoring Theagenes. The bronze statue broke in half and crushed the would-be criminal. 9. Birth Control by Sneezing The Ancient Greeks had various forms of birth control. Some forms involved certain herbs and plants, which worked very well. However, one physician, Soranus, advised women to do something a little odd. After intercourse, women were told to squat and sneeze to avoid becoming pregnant. He also suggested jumping up and down to dislodge the sperm. If that’s not crazy enough for you, the website Snopes.com was still debunking the “jump up and down” method of birth control as recently as 2007. 8. Brazen Bull In the 6th century BC, a brass worker named Perilaus of Athens created a large, hollow bull made of brass and gave it to a ruler named Phalaris. A door on the side of the bull allowed a man to climb into the sculpture. Once the door was closed, a fire could be lit from underneath and slowly roast the person. But it doesn’t end there. In the head of the bull was a series of stops and pipes that transformed the screams of the person into “the tenderest, most pathetic, most melodious of bellowings”. Phalaris was far from impressed. So disgusted by the cruelty of the piece, he asked Perilaus to climb into the bull and demonstrate the capabilities of the pipes. Once inside, Phalaris shut the door and ordered a fire lit beneath the bull. He reportedly said, “Receive the due reward of your wondrous art; let the music-maker be the first to play.” Before Perilaus, they removed him from the bull and threw him off a cliff. Despite Phalaris’s disgust, the brazen bull became the most common form of in Ancient Greece. Here’s an extra fact. Phalaris was a tyrant ruling in Acragas in Sicily from 570 BC to 554. He’s known for several building projects but he did have a cruel streak that made him the proverbial “evil tyrant”. According to legend, after he was overthrown by a general, the new ruler ordered Phalaris to roast inside the brazen bull. 7. Victorious Corpse Did you know? Cheating was a huge problem in Ancient Greek sport, just like today. Most of the time, it was the usual bribery or foul moves during games. Here is a picture of a scene on a kylix depicting two pankratists fighting. One of them is trying to gouge out the eye of his opponent while simultaneously biting. The umpire is preparing to strike the fighter for the foul. Some fighters would find an easier way and try to curse or hex their opponents using “curse tablets” to make them lose. An event held during the Olympic Games was the pankration, which was a mixed martial arts style that blended boxing and wrestling. Most famous of the pankratists was Arrhachion. During the 54th Olympiad in 564 BC, Arrhachion entered the pankration to defend his championship. However, his opponent got the better of him and put Arrachion into a chokehold. It is said Arrhachion’s trainer shouted, “What a fine funeral if you do not submit at Olympia”. Arrhachion responded by twisting and kicking his opponent’s foot and dislocating it. The pain forced his opponent to surrender. Unfortunately, the move broke Arrhachion’s neck. Despite that, the judges named Arrhachion the victor. he successfully defended his title. His fame spread as people held him up as the athletic ideal. Geographer Pausanias mentioned a statue immortalizing Arrhachion during his description of Phigalia

Lemmings Most people grew up with the myth that lemmings were driven by some sort of destructive instinct and would jump off cliffs in the millions, falling to their just because they followed the leader. This is often used as a metaphor in psychology classes to explain how crowds of people will follow each other blindly, or for parents to warn “if your friend jumped off a cliff, would you?” The answer used to be yes, if I were a lemming. But it turns out, that lemmings have been around for millions of years and it wasn’t until the Disney movie, Wild Wilderness came out in 1958 that the myth of the lemmings came to pass. Lemming populations rise and fall drastically, leading to mass migrations of lemmings where they travel long distances. Sometimes that can lead to exhaustion. But for the Disney movie, the filmmakers brought lemmings to Alberta, Canada which was not their native habitat and herded them to jump off a cliff and into a river. Of course their natural instinct is to survive. 9: Ostriches bury their heads in the sand From cartoons to movies, ostriches are known to bury their heads in the sand when things get too scary. It is one of the so called facts, that are so well known it almost seems like it has to be true, but it is actually just a popular myth. Ostriches are the largest birds on the planet and though they do have some predators, they aren’t the scaredy cats we might think. If ostriches did bury their heads under sand like that, not only would it not help save them. Instead, this idea may have come from their nesting behaviours. When preparing for eggs, they will dig a small hole on the ground to make a nest. After laying the eggs they rotate them every few hours. It’s possible that this expression started when early people saw the ostrich digging its nest. From the distance, only the large body would be visible above the sand, leading people to believe they buried their heads. When faced with predators, Ostriches are already more than equipped with their powerful legs that can be used for brutal kicks or to run at over 40 miles per hour! 8: Earwigs live in ears One of the best things I’m happy to report as a myth, is that earwigs burrow into ear canals and lay eggs. The world can sleep easy. Turns out Earwigs don’t even want to live in your ears! Preferring rotted wood and other areas, they thrive in outdoor areas. While it is still possible for them to go into your ear, so is it for many other creatures such as spiders or flies. The ear canal eventually gets too small for even the earwig though, and it cannot normally crawl into a brain. It is also not natural for these insects to lay eggs in this scenario. So while it is possible, it is nowhere near common enough to warrant the Earwigs disturbing name. Interestingly, many other languages give the insect a name that has to do with the ear. From the German “earworm” to the incredibly nasty French “ear-piercer”. Still, the earwig should be avoided but not feared, as just another insect. It isn't out to get you or ruin your dreams. 7: A Goldfish’s Memory Lasts 3 Seconds A while ago it became popular knowledge that goldfish have such small brains that they can’t remember anything beyond a few seconds. We can all sympathize with Dory, even though she wasn’t a goldfish…More recently though, scientific studies have proven that the goldfish deserves more credit than we give it. Researchers have shown, that goldfish appeared to remember special cues they were taught over 5 months after they were released into the wild. In fact, studies showed that goldfish were able to learn and actually be trained to respond to simple commands. They even tested as more intelligent than the noble trout. Current research is showing many fish species to be more aware than previously thought, with some species intelligence even comparing to rats and lizards. They have beaten mazes and can recognize other fish. There’s hope for us who have a memory like a goldfish!

The beach is never the same if something is trapped there when it shouldn’t be. Here you’ll find tales of unfortunate sea dwellers becoming the 10 Biggest Washed Up Creatures Removed From Beaches. The people of TheHub have seen it all, but we haven’t witnessed anything like these oversized mammals and sharp-toothed monsters. Whales seem to be beaching themselves a lot these days. But they’re not the only critters unwittingly caught in the undertow. Many giant beasts find themselves on the wrong end of the current and then roll into shore. If they’re lucky enough to survive the journey inland, they’ll need the help of land-based life forms like homo sapiens to get them back out to sea. Sure, you may be sitting behind the safety of your screen right now, but you never know… You could soon find yourself on the beach enjoying a brisk swim before you come face-to-face with an animal five times your size and in urgent need of full-body H2O cleanse. Outside of the lost or sick whales who wander into shallow waters, you could come across maniacal sharks, magnificent manatees, snapping turtles, gelatinous jellyfish, and cold crocodiles. Some are cruel, some are unassuming, but all are simply trying to swim for their livelihood. Watch these mammoths maneuver through the ocean let TheHub show you just what can happen when a deep water giant finds itself on dry ground. Entire Kitchen Knife Puppies are curious little creatures. Take Lexi here, a Staffordshire bull terrier in Sydney Australia, for example. She for some reason, swallowed an entire eight-inch steak knife! Like all of the other dogs on our list, Lexi was taken to vet for an upset stomach. Vets were beyond surprised when they performed x-rays and found a freaking knife INSIDE of her! The vets managed to remove the knife after carefully pulling it back through the dog’s esophagus, a meticulous effort that took close to an hour to pull off. Amazingly, Lexi, who was just a six month old puppy, managed to survive the occasion, though it spent three days in intensive care. How did she manage to swallow an entire knife? Well that’s a question no one can really answer. 14. A Whole Lightbulb In terms of animals eating weird stuff, dogs can go toe to toe with any creature on the planet. Especially Cody, a young Golden Retriever puppy who swallowed an entire light bulb. This poor doggo had been vomiting for days when his humans decided to take him to the vet. They did some x-rays and were alarmed to find that the curious puppy had an entire light bulb in his tummy. Thankfully they gave him intravenous fluids, and the pup passed the bulb intact, which is pretty amazing if you think about it. Generally speaking, Golden Retrievers are among the smartest dogs around. Since Cody was just a young, naive puppy at the time of this odd incident, we’ll give him the benefit of the doubt and chalk it up to inexperience. 13. An Electric Blanket Growing up to 18 feet long, Burmese Pythons are among the largest snakes in the world. They’re known to be active predators who stalk and strangle their prey. They’re able to kill large creatures such deer, alligators and large birds. However, there’s this case of a python who obviously didn’t get the smart gene, because it ate an electric blanket. In 2006, this 12-foot long snake needed an emergency surgery to save its life after it ate its security blanket. Snakes don’t regulate their own body temperatures very well, so its owner was nice enough to give him one. Apparently the blanket got tangled up with the rabbit its owner was serving it for dinner. The blanket stretched out along 8 feet of the reptile’s digestive track, so veterinary workers managed to cut an in 18 inch incision to remove the obstruction. Thankfully, the snake, whose name ironically is Houdini, was able to survive. 13. Car Tires Before we dive too deep into this, let’s just say that this won’t be the only shark on this list. As it turns out, there’s very little sharks won’t eat...including tires. In fact, tires have been found inside Tiger Sharks on more than one occasion. Known for their robust appetite, Tiger Sharks will eat anything unlucky enough to float in their direction. Even when they aren’t hungry, Marine Biologists have noted that they eat out of boredom, not too dissimilar to certain people Good thing they don’t eat rubber tires when they’re bored. 12. An Entire Deer Here is a little cooking tip for you. Deer meat is really tasty. Anything you can do with beef, you can do with Venison. Plus it’s leaner and healthier. Apparently the word is out because an Alligator in Alabama somehow managed to eat an entire doe. Weirdest, things, animals, tiger shark, shark eats shark, African rock python, shark eats tire, shark eats man, shark eats man’s arm, craziest things sharks eat, puppy eats knife, dog eats knife, weird things dogs eat, strange things animals eat, weird things sharks eat, puppy eats light bulb, dog eats rubber duckies, dog eats light bulb, weirdest things found in animals, weird things animals eat, strangest things found in animals, weirdest things ever found in animals, weirdest things ever found in sharks,
