We see symbols everyday, like the ampersand, caduceus and the heart icon/logo, but do you ever spare a thought for their origins? From Yin and Tang to the heart symbol, here are 10 Symbols & Icons You Don't Know the Meaning & Origins of! Sitting there on your keyboard like a bloated-out dollar sign on crack is one of the most used figures in creation. During a pesky part of its travels, the ampersand was first used throughout the days of the Roman empire. A quick way to join two things together. Its peculiar and squiggly formation, a logogram - for those in the known - is a union of the letters E and T. Caduceus - Have you ever heard the oxymoron “army intelligence”? Well, this next one will drive the truth of that saying home. The staff of Mercury or Hermes pictured here, depending on your mythological tentpole, is the medical go-to symbol for a lot of health organizations and professionals. It is a short rod intertwined by two snakes and topped with a pair of wings. The Heart Logo - Candy, jewelry, that cute way certain coeds dot their Is, a thousand biker tattoos, perhaps the heart symbol truly is one of the most commonplace and hackneyed logos in existence. It’s all over the place. Now, and here’s the rub, it looks nothing, not even close, to a real heart. The Barber Pole - This one has a vile and sinister backstory. The classic red and white swirly stick was first introduced back in the Middle Ages. Back in those Black Death filled happy-go-lucky, hope you reach 40, heydays, doctors were too stuck up to perform common surgeries. “Yuck, blood,” was their go to squeal. There was a demand in the market and void needed to be filled. Skull and Crossbones. This icon is a well-established image that has worked wonders for Johnny Depp’s Film career. Its main stronghold and where you can usually find it is over anything that’s guaranteed a speedy trip six-feet under. Poison, nuclear, pissed off bikers, villains and just about anything you don’t want to mess with. The logo is mostly associated with Pirates and most people think that’s the place modern society borrowed it from. Wrong! Most Pirate flags were personal designs. Yin and Yang. An ancient symbol first used during the better part of 400BC and discussed by Zou Yan in the Daoist philosophy and the School Of Naturalists. The symbol, that has mostly stayed true to its original meaning, has existed in Chinese literature for the better part of this country’s millennial history. Fleur-De-Lis - This emblematic, and mostly French, symbol became a mainstream and ubiquitous decorative design for royalty. In a way, it became one of the first logos and brands of the modern time. The Fleur- De - Lis or “Flower of Lily," for those who don’t speak frog, graced countless European coats of arms, and, like a wildfire fad, the rad design crossed borders and invaded countries. OK. The “I’m alright” signal which in some countries will get your barred from the pub - is a sacred emblem in Buddhism and Hinduism. The hand gesture, which in many cases can also be translated into text or pictures, signifies “Vitarka Mudra” which translates into “Mudra of Discussion.” The Lightning Bolt. Never has a symbol signified so many things with so little. This could easily reference The Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, A DC Comic Speedster named Flash, The Nazi Movement, and skinheads, a charging station for your mobile phone and the wrath of God. The Lightning bolt is one of the oldest and most recognized icons in history. It bridged and overpassed, in a natural way, civilizational gaps. Popping up, almost supernaturally, throughout history in different, extreme, far-off points of the planet. Swastika. Never has a symbol been hated more. An ancient icon, stolen and plundered by a mustached madman and a society of knaves bend on world conquest and genocide. Nowadays, you can’t look at a Swastika without feeling the need to kick some Nazi SOB straight in the balls. It has become a beacon for cruelty, dehumanization, and absolute holds-no-bar evil.

Here are the top 11 creepy and shocking ways the government actually uses to spy on us from hacking our Smart TVs to drones! Learn about the BIGGEST of everything Monday, Wednesday, and Friday just subscribe! # 7 Through Streetlights A product from Intellistreets promises to reduce energy consumption and light pollution by 50% and 70% by using cameras and motion sensors. They dim and brighten based on nearby foot traffic, but they are also capable of broadcasting sound for advertisements, music, or emergency broadcasts. However, having a bunch of cameras set up around town that can record any pedestrian and presumably keep track of suspicious individuals makes some people nervous. It feels just a little bit too “Big Brother”. It doesn’t help that some people want to equip these smart lights with microphones along with the cameras, so not only are they Always Watching, They’re Always Listening. # 6 Sidewalk and Public Space Cameras According to a report from 2012, the City of Chicago has access to over 10,000 publicly and privately owned cameras that are set up throughout the city. It is becoming more and more common for mid-sized to large cities are spending hundreds of thousands of dollars on surveillance software and cameras. This may feel like a violation of personal space, but this hyper vigilance has apparently had at least a minimally positive effect. The proper monitoring of certain areas, combined with educating the community about the surveillance cameras in place, have resulted in lowered crime rates. # 5 Recording Buses In certain cities, even the public transportation has prying eyes and ears listening in on conversations. San Francisco, Baltimore, Detroit, Hartford, Concord, and Boston all have systems in place that allow for listen-in spying. Buses are equipped with visual-audio recording equipment so that not only is there visual footage of you making a commute, but recordings of whatever conversations you or your accomplice may be having. Homeland Security insists it's not illegal, deter crimes, and allow easier prosecution of criminal offenders. # 4 Sending and Receiving Emails You’ve probably experienced doing something along the lines of sending an I.M. to your friend about a product you’re looking into and then suddenly you’re seeing advertisements on the sides of websites targeting you specifically for that product? If you’re watching this video, you might even see one of those targeted ads right now. That's because many messengers and email services have the right to scan your emails to specifically target you with ads. It’s not just them who has access, the FBI and a whole plethora of government agencies can access those too. # 3 RFID Microchips The US Military has been developing technology that would allow them to monitor the health and performance of soldiers during battle using something called RFID Microchips. This may sound like something out of Sci-Fi, but those very microchips are already creeping into everyday life. Many of our credit and debit cards are now equipped with those very same chips, and in some states, those very same chips are legally required to be inserted into your pets. Yes, these chips can be used to track your locations - and soon human bodies might be embedded with these chips. A school district in Texas actually plans to start using RFID chips to keep track of their students' locations and “ensure safety”. Is this a necessary step to protect children or an extreme act of privacy invasion? # 2 Through your Phones When you think of the government spying on you through your phone, you might imagine people listening and tapping into your conversations, but it is more likely they’re collecting all the other data your phone accumulates. When you make a phone call, it generates metadata - things like the time, date, and location that the call was made, and the phone numbers of all parties involved in the call. So you don’t have to worry about the government hearing what you say in the privacy of your phone calls, just when, where, and who you had the conversation with. # 1 Through Your Computer It’s, unfortunately, very easy for hackers to penetrate your computer and gain access to your webcam and microphone, allowing them to watch and listen to you in the privacy of your room or wherever you use your personal computer. However the creepiest culprit of spying through your computer might not be random hackers, but the FBI. They have a spy tool called GUMFISH that allows them to just turn on the camera and mic in infected computers, allowing them to monitor private citizens.
