A word about safety. You do not want to breath in these gases. I spent more than a dozen years as a Pipe Fitter where I was exposed to every kind of vapor and airborne particle that you can think of. We used common sense precautions while grinding, using cutting torch, and welding metal. Even so, floors have to be swept, tools are exposed, and dust masks and fans can only do so much. DO NOT TRY THIS EXPERIMENT. IT MAY BE MORE DANGEROUS THAN I THINK. Why would I try it then? I think of chlorinated water we drink, immersion in swimming pools, and I remember as a child when we burned household trash, I was probably more exposed to these chemicals back then, than I was in today's experiments.... In this video I demonstrate the Rudiger Roll Friction Fire method using only tree bark, a flat stone and Hemp fiber. The point of this video is to prove that tools are not necessary using this method. The tree bark and stone were collected on my hike today. No tools or ash were used and no preparation was required. I have used Yucca, Jute and a few other plant fibers on natural surfaces without ash as well. The more coarse a fiber is increases your chances of success using this method without an accelerant. I still maintain that accelerants are better to use with this method. Not all fibers will work like this without an accelerant( i.e. Ash, Rust, etc;). Hemp is a very good fiber to use with this method. Here is the first video using Hemp with the fire roll: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v L1Ko1NoWXCE All natural material can be used with the fire roll and sometimes reqiures no preparation as demonstrated in this video. Stones can be used in the same manner as above. this shows how I make my own version of the mini inferno. These are 100% water proof and 100% sure fire. The will burn for around 7-10 min. and will dry and ignite wet wood.

Since I was making some good old Denim Char Cloth anyway, thought this would be a good time to go ahead and try something that I've been thinking about for a while now... charring a dollar bill. Certainly!!! with 25% linen and 75% cotton fibers within, it's a going to make great char cloth... LOL! Come see how it all turned out. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks!

I wasn't going to make a video today. I was just outside practicing the Fire Roll technique. I brought 3 cotton balls out, my ashes, and boards, and quickly got ignition 3 times. I thought I would try some fabric for a change. There was an old shop towel under my work table so that's what I tried. Surprisingly, the ignition came pretty easily, so I decided to show you all this fascinating technique again. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of this video. Thanks!

I love my Old Hickory Butcher Knife. It's a sentimental attachment. 2 years ago when I was about as broke as person could be... and had been that way for years... I sprung for the $13 to buy it. So the whole time I was learning bush craft and making fire specifically, it's been my faithful go to knife for making ff sets, digging out and cutting mullein by the roots, cutting up the steak I just grilled on the hobo stove, stirring my creek water hot chocolate, and a100 other tasks... and now, in this video being the hand hold as I roll these 2 cotton and ash fire rolls. Check it out. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video. Thanks! I am very grateful for the free music from the Youtube editors page... It is.... Blue Moon by Alan Glen, Roger Cotton

A personal challenge of mine has been to get 3 friction fires out of one cotton ball. I've gotten 2 out of 3 many times. Today, I finally got 3. Check it out. Please SUBSCRIBE at the end of the video.

There really is no comparison. The non-ashed cotton fabric will ember up readily while exposed to the heat source but then immediated go out when removed from that source... The ashed cotton fabric will readily accept a spark and then with aerating grow that spark into a hot enough ember that will ignite to flames the cotton fabric. Come see the experiment within. I recieved several PM's requesting this. In this video I will be using a piece of Cedar I found outdoors that I split down (Any wood will do). The set is 5 and 1/4 inch long. I didn't really do any smoothing and the pieces are not perfectly straight. I'm certain you can go smaller using this friction fire method. I have also used this method with a split piece of wood for the hand hold and a smooth stone for the base. See video links below for variations of this method using Natural rolling surfaces Outdoors : Tree Bark : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v Oruoq... Stones : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v RRrph... Split wood hand hold and Stone base : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v M5E_M... A 2.75 inch long set can be seen in this video : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v e5RD8...
